New York is home to over 1 million veterans and more than 60,000 active duty service members, reservists and National Guard. All have answered a call above and beyond any other, and we owe them a debt of gratitude for their service and sacrifice. Each day, I work to guarantee our veterans the benefits they have earned – from quality health care at a VA worthy of their service, a chance at a college education, affordable loans to buy a home for their family, and new jobs to succeed in the economy when they’ve returned home to their family. This year, as a special way to show our appreciation, for the first time ever, more than 130 art museums, cultural institutions and historic sites in every corner of New York will open their doors to New York’s veterans and active duty service members free of charge throughout Memorial Day weekend. It’s called New York Museums Salute Memorial Day: A Weekend of Appreciation, and includes top museums and cultural institutions all across the state welcoming our veterans and active service members free of charge from Saturday, May 29 through Monday, May 31. Click here for the full list of participating institutions. To gain free admission, veterans and active duty members must submit one of the following forms of ID along with photo ID: •    Discharge papers (e.g. Certificate of Service, Separation Papers (aka DD-214 or DD-215) •    Active military ID card •    Reservist military ID card •    Retiree military ID card (these retiree ID cards are also given to certain spouses and children •    Formal letter on VA letterhead confirming service and veteran status (e.g. VA Statement of Service or VA Benefits Award Letter for service connected disability, pension or DIC, etc.) •    Veterans Identification Card (VIC) •    TRICARE insurance card •    Dog tags •    Government-issued photo identifications that indicate military service I wish all of our brave vets and active troops, and all of the families that support them, a good Memorial Day.
