New York is home to approximately 1 million men and women who have answered our nation’s call and served with distinction in our Armed Forces. As we honor our fallen heroes this Memorial Day weekend, we must also redouble our nation’s efforts to care for our living heroes.

Every man and woman who has worn the uniform defending our country deserves the support they have earned when they return home. We have an obligation to provide a VA worthy of their service, access to a college degree, affordable loans to buy a home and raise a family, and help finding a good-paying job.

Providing New York's Veterans with Care and Benefits

Despite qualifying for a broad range of benefits for their service, more than 720,000 of New York State’s veterans are not receiving health care benefits through the VA.

Senator Gillibrand meets with Long Island veterans

This week, Senator Gillibrand announced she is introducing legislation requiring the VA to inform veterans of the benefits they are eligible for, send all appropriate application materials to veterans, and automatically enroll all veterans returning home today in VA sponsored health care. The Providing Real Outreach to Veterans Act (PRO-VETS) ensures that more veterans are made aware of the benefits they are entitled to. Creating Jobs for Veterans

Twenty-two percent of veterans returning home today from Iraq and Afghanistan are out of work. These brave young men and women have an un-rivaled work ethic that would serve any business well.

To help connect recent veterans with better job opportunities, Senator Gillibrand has been traveling all across the state, holding roundtable meetings bringing veterans and business leaders together to address this crisis.

Senator Gillibrand has met with veterans and business leaders in Capital Region, Central New York, Hudson Valley, Long Island, Mohawk Valley, Rochester / Finger Lakes and Western New York, and plans to continue holding roundtable meetings across the state.

Senator Gillibrand is also fighting to provide tax credits for businesses who hire a recent veteran, and protect access to critical job training programs that will help prepare veterans for the difficult job market.
