September 28th, 2011
Everywhere U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand travels across the state talking to New Yorkers, the number one issue on everyone's mind is the economy. She spent the last month in every corner of the state discussing solutions to turn around the economy and create good paying jobs. The Senator also visited with families and businesses hit hardest by Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee to see the damage firsthand and help provide the federal assistance needed to rebuild.

Gillibrand Jobs Agenda

Made in America Manufacturing

America was powered by New York manufacturing in the 20th century, but we’ve lost over 160,000 manufacturing jobs in the last decade alone. To renew the strength of our manufacturers and create new jobs, Senator Gillibrand is pushing her Made in America manufacturing initiative. The plan creates a “Made in America” competitive grant program to provide small and mid-size manufacturers with resources to retool their operations and retrain their workforce for advanced manufacturing, such as clean energy, computer technology, aerospace and biotechnology. Strengthening New York's Rural Economy

As we rebuild New York’s rural areas that were hit hard by heavy rain and flooding, Senator Gillibrand has also outlined a plan to strengthen the economies of New York’s rural communities for the long term. Senator Gillibrand’s plan increases access to credit and capital for rural small businesses, upgrades rural infrastructure and expands rural broadband. Click here for more information.

A Farm Bill that Delivers for New York

After holding more than 15 listening sessions with local farmers across New York State over that past year, Senator Gillibrand outlined her priorities for the upcoming Farm Bill, a sweeping piece of legislation that affects every aspect of agricultural policy. The cornerstone of her proposal  would simplify and improve dairy pricing for farmers and consumers alike. As New York’s first member of the Senate Agriculture Committee in nearly 40 years, Senator Gillibrand is committed to ensuring the next Farm Bill delivers for New York.  Click here for more information on Senator Gillibrand’s priorities for the next Farm Bill.

Senator Gillibrand introduced comprehensive legislation to ensure the meat on kitchen tables across the country is safe to eat. After Senator Gillibrand’s push to regulate 6 deadly, unchecked non-0157 E. coli strands, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) finally named these “Big 6” E. coli strands as dangerous adulterants that need to be tested. This new measure would make it illegal to sell ground beef tainted with these non-0157 strands. Click here for more information.

21st Century Communication For First Responders

Ten years after September 11, a key recommendation of the 9/11 Commission Report has yet to be fulfilled: arming our first responders with the technology they need to communicate effectively in real-time during an emergency. Senator Gillibrand is leading the charge in the Senate to bring our first responder technology into the 21st century by fighting to pass the Public Safety Spectrum and Wireless Innovation Act.  The bipartisan legislation would create a public safety communications network. Click here for more information.

August 4, 2011

It's been a busy summer already, as Senator Gillibrand continues to travel throughout New York State discussing proposals to create jobs and get the economy moving again. Too many New Yorkers are still out of work or worried about keeping the job they have. Senator Gillibrand is committed to working in Washington to forge solutions to the many challenges New Yorkers face.

Here are some of her latest efforts:

The Gillibrand Jobs Report

Ensuring Higher Wages and Employment Opportunities for Women
With women still facing gender inequality in the workforce, Senator Gillibrand is pushing the Women WIN Jobs Act, which would provide women with a pathway to higher paying job fields in which they are currently underrepresented. Through a federal grant, this legislation would help women earn more and boost our nation’s economy.

Supporting Local Growers and Nutritious Produce
Senator Gillibrand continues her commitment to the promotion of healthy nutrition for families and children through the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) bill. STAND UP Act: Protecting Teen Drivers
As a mother of two young children, Senator Gillibrand is pushing an effort to keep teens safe while driving. The STAND UP Act calls on states to implement graduated drivers license programs for teen drivers, giving them more experience behind the wheel before getting an unrestricted driver's license. The bill sets minimum standards of 16 years-old for a driver’s license, and 18 years-old for an unrestricted license to help protect our children from the number one killer of teens nationwide, car crashes. Click here for more information on Senator Gillibrand’s STAND UP Act

Encouraging Entrepreneurship, Improving Community and Food Safety, Addressing Needs of Underrepresented Communities

June 21, 2011

We are still in the midst of one of the most difficult economic times in America’s history. Too many New Yorkers are struggling to find a good-paying job, keep the job they already have, and pay their bills. U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand knows that government doesn’t create jobs, people do. That is why she is committed to fighting to change the culture in Washington to help foster entrepreneurial opportunity right here in New York State.

Here is the latest on some of the Senator’s most recent activities:

Fostering Entrepreneurship and Growth of Small Businesses

While small businesses serve as the economy’s biggest job creator, responsible for half of all private sector jobs, they are struggling to grow in this tough economy. To help kickstart the backbone of our economy, Senator Gillibrand is working to give entrepreneurs access to the capital needed to start more small businesses and create jobs in New York. Her plan focuses on directing more early capital to business start-ups, tax-free savings accounts for entrepreneurs, and tax credits to leverage private investment in new businessesRead more

Improving Communications Systems For Our First Responders

New Yorkers know better than anyone the constant threats that our country faces. Since the 9/11 attacks and recovery, our country, states and communities have taken major steps to increase our security and preparedness. But as a nation, we remain severely limited in our capability to communicate across all levels of government and among different regional first responders in the event of an emergency situation. In fact, any teenager with a smart phone can share more information than our emergency responders can. To help bring first responder technology into the 21st century, Senator Gillibrand is leading a bipartisan effort to pass the Public Safety Spectrum and Wireless Innovation Act. Read more.

Keeping Our Food Safe for Families

The recent E. coli outbreak in Europe is a stark reminder of some of the vulnerabilities in our food safety laws here at home. Across New York, approximately 3.2 million people are infected with a food-borne illness each year, according to estimates based on Centers for Disease Control data. After successfully passing her Consumer Recall Notification Act last Congress, Senator Gillibrand is now pushing for new legislation that would help protect the food we eat from E. Coli and other deadly contaminants. Read more

Addressing the Needs of Our Underrepresented Communities

The unemployment rate for African-Americans is over six percentage points higher than the overall unemployment rate, and a growing number of African-American families are turning to faith-based organizations for support. For a second straight year, Senator Gillibrand convened a legislative summit in Washington, DC of African-American faith-based leaders from across the state designed to introduce them to federal government officialsbusiness and non-profit leaders and to help New York’s faith-based organizations navigate the new budget realities. Video of the event available here. Click here for more information. Senator Gillibrand also announced the Urban Jobs Act, which focuses on increasing employment among at-risk youth. Read More.

Honoring New York's Fallen Heroes and All Veterans

May 26, 2011

New York is home to approximately 1 million men and women who have answered our nation’s call and served with distinction in our Armed Forces. As we honor our fallen heroes this Memorial Day weekend, we must also redouble our nation’s efforts to care for our living heroes.

Every man and woman who has worn the uniform defending our country deserves the support they have earned when they return home. We have an obligation to provide a VA worthy of their service, access to a college degree, affordable loans to buy a home and raise a family, and help finding a good-paying job.

Providing New York's Veterans with Care and Benefits

Despite qualifying for a broad range of benefits for their service, more than 720,000 of New York State’s veterans are not receiving health care benefits through the VA.

Senator Gillibrand meets with Long Island veterans

This week, Senator Gillibrand announced she is introducing legislation requiring the VA to inform veterans of the benefits they are eligible for, send all appropriate application materials to veterans, and automatically enroll all veterans returning home today in VA sponsored health care.  The Providing Real Outreach to Veterans Act (PRO-VETS) ensures that more veterans are made aware of the benefits they are entitled to.  Click here for detailed information about the Senator's new legislation.

If you are a veteran struggling to access the benefits you qualify for, please contact Senator Gillibrand’s office for assistance.

Creating Jobs for Veterans

Twenty-two percent of veterans returning home today from Iraq and Afghanistan are out of work. These brave young men and women have an un-rivaled work ethic that would serve any business well.

To help connect recent veterans with better job opportunities, Senator Gillibrand has been traveling all across the state, holding roundtable meetings bringing veterans and business leaders together to address this crisis.

Senator Gillibrand holds roundtable discussion with veterans and business leaders

Senator Gillibrand has met with veterans and business leaders in Capital Region, Central New York, Hudson Valley, Long Island, Mohawk Valley, Rochester / Finger Lakes and Western New York, and plans to continue holding roundtable meetings across the state.

Senator Gillibrand is also fighting to provide tax credits for businesses who hire a recent veteran, and protect access to critical job training programs that will help prepare veterans for the difficult job market.
